Workshop II
Media-caricatures and the perception trap of European and Islamic media
Workshopleader:
Loay Mudhoon, Editor-in-Chief, quantara.de

In the aftermath of the caricature controversy that was a media-nightmare and signaled a turning point in the relationship between Europe and the Islamic world, one thing became clear: if a society treats sensitive subjects with a lack of cultural competence and necessary background knowledge, the potential chances for a transnational escalation are high.
Why did it take four months from publishing the so-called Mohammed-cartoons to the start of the East-Western-irritations, and especially the violent riots that ended with the attacks on Western embassies and citizens? Is there an explanation as to why there was such a massive mobilisation of anti-Western forces in a region this big? What was the media’s role in this conflict that was exploited by politically secular regimes? What were the omissions and mistakes made by the creators of public opinion?
In order to find answers to these questions, we will analyse events and reactions of significant East and West-media together.
As a ‘counter example’ we will examine together why ‘Fitna’ (the islamophobic short-compilation-film by Dutch politician Geert Wilders) did not trigger the same reactions. Our goal is to find recommendations on how to deal with the questions described above.

Workshop III
Future 2.0
How to create multinational and multimedia Journalism we want?

A multi-aktive panel
Workshopleader:
Christian Stahl, German Foundation for Integration (Deutschlandstiftung für Integration) VDZ
Radio journalist, filmmaker and managing director of a media company. He conducts trainings for people working in the media world. For more than 10 years he worked as anchorman for Berlin-based radio multikulti.

Social networks, citizen reporters, twitter and youtube: Will they lead to the end of (serious) journalism? Or bring it to another level? What kind of journalism do we need in future? Multilingual? Multicultural? Multimedial? How to overcome language barrieres? How can we take advantage of web2.0? And create interactive and international journalism and journalstic formats, which are serious and up to date, as well as globally and localy, representative and responsible?
This multi-active panel will discuss these questions and try to develop models for new forms of journalism and a constructive collaboration between young journalists from all over the world.
